Theme: The Guiding Force of Intention

Teacher: Cheryl Kurash

“… It’s my perspective that mindfulness is more than paying attention, it’s paying intention…Paying attention engages the mind. Paying intention additionally engages the will”

                     ~Jon Kabat-Zinn

It is said that Intention operates in every moment, at the unconscious, subconscious or conscious level.  If unconscious or subconscious, it is possible you may end up… where you do not wish to be!  Conscious Intention is at the heart of Mindfulness practice in its centrality to setting a direction, choosing an action, and determining where we will end up.

Our class this month will be one of deepening the conscious recognition of Intention, as it arises for you at this time in your life.  Join as we explore, through mindful practice, guided reflection and discussion, this first essential component of mindfulness.

This class is offered by donation to support the Coalition for the Homeless. Suggested donation is $20, and no one is turned away.

March Theme: “Gently revisit familiar mindfulness practices”

Teacher: Mary Rothfusz

We will explore how we meet ourselves post-course and throughout our
daily challenges. Jack Kornfield shares, “through practice, gently and
gradually we can collect ourselves and learn how to be more fully what
we do.”

We can approach our practice formally and informally, being gentle
when we meet the obstacles that can come in the way after we leave the
course.

Mary Rothfusz, MA, is a mindfulness meditation teacher who believes
that each day is an opportunity to embrace the present, follow your
passions and embrace your struggles. Mary spent two decades working in
the service industry until a work-related spinal injury acted as a
catalyst to motivate her to explore new avenues. Throughout her
recovery, Mary heavily relied on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
(MBSR) to relieve her pain, which transformed her life and led her
towards her true calling to help others relieve emotional and physical
pain through mindfulness. Mary has actively participated in many
mindfulness and yoga classes and trainings. She is a Qualified MBSR
teacher with the Mindfulness Center of Brown University.

Josh Wright and Katie Crum.

Josh Wright was trained in MBSR as well as Shinzen Young's Unified Mindfulness techniques. A Harvard-educated economist whose career spans 3 continents, the pressure-cooker of Wall Street, and the halls of power at the Federal Reserve, his teaching is grounded in the working world as much as the meditation hall – and a unique appreciation for how they can inform each other. His engagement with contemplative practice also includes over 20 years of hatha yoga.

Katie Crum is a student of Zen in the Soto tradition and a practicing Episcopalian; she has studied yoga in the Iyengar tradition for more than 20 years. She took her first MBSR course in 1994 and is now certified to teach. As an art historian and museum professional most of her working life, Katie has a special interest in creativity and the joy that art and music bring to life. Another of her special interest is mindfulness for adolescents.

This session will be offered by donation to support the New York Insight Meditation Center.

Theme: Creating Space for New Beginnings
with
Liz Gluckstern

“It’s always hard to believe that the courageous step is so close to us”

- from “Beginning” by David Whyte

Discover a sacred and radical truth; that the peace and happiness we seek is already within us. The year 2021 has both surprised and shaken us. Let's welcome the Fall by settling into stillness and silence with support of the MBSR community. As we open our hearts to compassion and possibility by sitting, moving and walking mindfully, we create space for new beginnings, hope and contentment.

Liz Gluckstern, CWPC, CLC, RYT-200: After learning of her family's Alzheimer's history in 2013, Liz’s trajectory went from laymen to yoga and mindfulness adept. She transitioned from working in the corporate world to healthcare. She now harnesses the opportunity of working at a hospital to share her meditation and movement practices with front line workers where she serves as an on-site wellness coach.

This session will be offered by donation to support the Alzheimer's Association.

July 2021 theme: Working Mindfulness with Energy

As energy and awareness are intimately connected, we will explore practices that engage and move emotional energy and bring us back to greater balance and wellbeing.

During our time together we will take time to visit the body and explore with kind curiosity places energy can become tight or blocked and how to support freeing emotional energy through somatic awareness and gentle opening.

Instructor: Padma has taught mindfulness and meditation in Europe and the US for more than 20 years and is a qualified MBSR teacher with UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness, and a Mindfulness for Health instructor with Breathworks UK.  She teaches mindfulness for staff and patients in a large hospital network and provides individual coaching and support to people dealing with life altering health conditions.  Padma is also a hospital chaplain.

Class is offered by donation to support the NY Insight Meditation Center.
